1st Visit to Manzanita - 2016

Well, this past weekend was the first visit to Manzanita this year!  I didn't go because of the issues with my shoulder and knee... but, Jim went.

He had plans of doing some backhoe work, fixing the generator, moving the RV to the lower driveway...  well, some of that happened.

First of all, we couldn't find the keys to the storage building and the backhoe.  I got a hold of Vince, the guy who did some backhoe work for us last year.. he said he was in San Diego, but, he had left the key in the ignition of the backhoe...  Um... ok?  Well after buying a new ignition switch with a new set of keys, when Jim got down there, he found that the key was not in the ignition, but in the tool box...  Dodged a bullet on that one and we can return the unopened switch!  But, the backhoe wouldn't start!  Upon investigation, he found that the solenoid would not engage and the the Bendix drive would not engage either... (I don't have a clue what that means, but whatever....)  So, he removed the starter and brought it home to work on it this next week...

He then tried to fix the generator... due to it kicking back on him last fall when he tried to start it, the recoil was broken, but he found he didn't have the tools to fix it...  Ok, brought the generator recoil home and the replacement part is $12.95.

Then, the poor man went to move the RV to the lower driveway...  we had pulled the batteries on the equipment for the winter... Jim took a battery down with him...  BUT, the backhoe was parked where the RV was going to go.  So in trying to fix the backhoe starter and it wouldn't start he couldn't move it nor the RV... Sometimes you take three steps forward and you just don't get anywhere.

But, Jim did cut the lock off the storage building, and he got a whole trailer full of stuff put in storage down in Panguitch..

Giggle...  He's tired and sunburned but I'm glad he's home...from another amazing adventure.

Some Toys for the Cabin

Cheri and I have been talking and we came to the conclusion that once the weather gets better and we start working down at the cabin, the only way we'll get help on weekends will be if there's some fun things to do down there as well.  So we came came up with the idea that a couple of 4 wheelers would entice younger kids to make the trip down.  So we have shopped around and bought two just recently.

Honda Fourtrax 250 - two wheel drive

Yamaha 350 Big Bear - 4 wheel drive, came with a Warn winch and snow plow.

Now we are concerned that we won't get any work done.

The adventure continues. . . . .

WILDLIFE URBAN INTERFACE PLAN? HUH?

The next assignment that Jim gave me was to write the Wildlife Urban Interface Plan to submit with the application for the Building Permit...  I have read through the instructions, and I'm still going, "HUH?"

So, last night, I told Jim that I was going to go to Google and see if there are any examples of this plan that I can take a peek at, and get an idea what it is exactly.

Well, I did...  And, I've found out that it's actually a plan telling the county what you are doing to protect your home and the surrounding area from fire..  Why didn't they just say that..

They want to know if there are fire hydrants around, or wells, and what materials your home is being built with, and the positioning of the home on the property... stuff like that..

Groan...  They could have just cut through the chase, and not freaked me out with this long and over complicated quasi explanation.

ANOTHER GRAND ADVENTURE

We are working hard to submit all the paperwork for our building permit... all I can say is, "Picky Picky Picky".  I think there's a thousand different picky little parts.

My job this week was to get the water certificate.  This tells Kane County that there is water available to be hooked up on our property... This entailed calling the water department, and nicely asking for the paperwork.  Well, the guy who is in charge of the water department, doesn't answer his Utah telephone during winter months, and we didn't have his Las Vegas telephone number... After a little investigation, I found the Las Vegas number, called it, and the man informed me that it's not a certificate, it's a letter.... sigh...

I've requested the "letter" which is supposed to take 2 - 3 days, and then the General Contractor (Jim) will assign me a new project.

Some of us can only work on one assignment at a time..

...another grand adventure...

THIS IS GETTING RIDICULOUS

OK,  we've had some wonderful early spring weather here in Provo and the mountains have been melting.  So we started making plans and the rush is on to get down to the cabin site and start building.  The roads are there, the terraces are there for the big shed and garage and we're ready to trench in the power.  Jim is watching the nearest web cam of the area almost every day.  It's not much to look at, but it does show the snow fall on the ground.

It was almost all gone a week ago and we knew once gone we had to wait about a week for the roads to dry before attempting passage up the mountain without a four wheel drive.  Well today we get a notice from the local ski resort about 20 miles from the cabin site, Brianhead.  They received 18 inches of snow in the past 24 hours.  Current conditions?  It's snowing.

Oh mother of all that's snowy, why?  Why me?  We know it's early and we should be patient.

1st Owner/Builder Meeting

Jim had this first Owner/Builder meeting with his two new "clients" tonight.  They asked how their house was coming and how far along he had got.

Jim told him had had bought two windows,  and had bought trim for the livingroom, and told them what he had accomplished in the past couple of weeks.

The clients (Mahayla and Brea) felt he had done adequate work in the past couple and we happy with what he had to report and the progress....

Ok, so, I know this doesn't have anything to do with building the cabin...  it's just so cute to see..
